Romanians spent over EUR 8 bln in hypermarkets, in 2010

Large retailers seem to have overcome the economic crisis last year, as Romanians spent over EUR 8 bln in hypermarkets during 2010. Carrefour recently posted sales worth EUR 1.13 bln for 2010, according to ‘Gandul’ newspaper.

The amount is just 0.4 pc under the retailer’s sales of 2009. In France, Carrefour’s sales reached EUR 41.8 bln, while its global turnover exceeded EUR 100 bln. Actually, retailers rank among the largest companies that operate in Romania.

Based on its turnover, Metro Cash&Carry Romania ranks 4th in the top of Romanian companies, with sales of EUR 1.35 bln in 2009, according to the ‘100 Companies’ survey made by FinMedia. Carrefour ranked 9th in this top, with a turnover above the EUR 1 bln threshold as early as two years ago.

The companies that operate the Kaufland and Cora hypermarkets also belong to the selective group of companies that had impressive sales, worth EUR 778 M and EUR 400 M respectively, according to estimations made by the ‘Ziarul Financiar’ newspaper.

By advertising their small prices, hypermarkets convinced each day more than 7,000 inhabitants of Bucharest to prefer them for their shopping needs, with the average figure being double on weekends. Another factor that entices consumers is represented by the own brands of each retailer.
