Siemens to build low budget trams in Romania

The Bucharest Transport Corporation (RATB) jointly with Astra Vagoane and Siemens companies will manufacture a low-cost version of a state-of-the-art tram.

The new type of vehicle, named ‘Imperio,’ was described by RATB CEO Adrian Crit as “cheap and enjoying the success of the Logan on both local and foreign markets.

The tram will be built at Western quality, with low floor and air conditioned, and will cost approximately 2 million Euros, compared to the average price of such a vehicle, which is 2.5 million.” The tram will have 2 to 6 segments and will transport some 300 passengers at most.

The three companies already signed Monday a framework-agreement of partnership. Astra Vagoane will invest in arranging the production line at the RATB Central Workshops in Bucharest, Siemens will provide some parts, including the electric engine, while RATB will come with the manufacturing areas and a workforce estimated at 150.

The prototype of the Imperio will be ready in November and 4-5 trams will be manufactured by the end of the year. Annual output is estimated at 30-40 units.
